Oncology Frontier:  How do the NCCN Guidelines differ from the ASCO Guidelines?

　　Dr Carlson: The ASCO Guidelines and the NCCN Guidelines are actually quite complementary with each other. The ASCO Guidelines tend to be guidelines that focus on a relatively narrow apportion of patient care and look at great depth into the scientific evidence and information at the specific decision point or treatment type. The NCCN Guidelines are different in that they cover the continuum of care to the assessment of patient risk， to diagnosis， to treatment， to follow-up and survivorship after treatment and to end-of-life care. The NCCN Guidelines are continuous across that spectrum so that there is no decision that needs to be made that is not discussed in our guidelines. Because of that， our guidelines tend to be more useful at the point of patient care， while the ASCO Guidelines are guidelines that are in much greater depth and have their greatest value when a physician is trying to formally educate themselves but not necessarily at the point of care because the documents are just too extensive. So the two guidelines， from my perspective， are actually quite complementary.
